RESUMEN

In the present study, we report for the first time the occurrence of the alpheid shrimps Leptalpheus forceps Williams, 1965 and Leptalpheus marginalis Anker, 2011 in the state of Pará, in northern Brazil. Both Leptalpheus species (males, non-ovigerous females, and females carrying eggs) were collected from the burrows of the callichirid  "ghost" shrimp, Lepidophthalmus siriboia Felder Rodrigues, 1993, in a muddy-sandy intertidal zone of the Ajuruteua Peninsula, in the Bragança region. These records update the known geographical distribution of the two species, with L. forceps extending its Brazilian occurrence from the state of Bahia to state of Pará, and L. marginalis which was exclusively found on the Caribbean coast of Colombia is now recorded in Brazil.

Feeding is an important factor for the successful rearing of larvae of the crab species. Further information on the morphological features of the foregut may to reveal larval feeding behaviour and or/whether there is a lecithotrophy in some or even in all stages of the larval cycle. In the present study, the structural development of the foregut and their digestive functions were examined in larvae of two brachyurans, Uca vocator and Panopeus occidentalis, reared in the laboratory. During larval development, the foreguts of the larvae in the first and last zoeal stages and in the megalopa stage were microscopically examined, described and illustrated. The zoeal foreguts of both species were well developed, showing specialization with a functional cardiopyloric valve and a filter press. The megalopa stage had a complex and specialized gastric mill similar to that found in adult crabs with the appearance of rigidly calcified structures. These results support the hypothesis that the feeding behaviour of each larval stage is directly related to the morphological structure of the foregut. Such facts strongly indicate that all larval stages of both . vocator and P occidentalis need an external food source before completing the larval development in a planktonic environment.


A alimentação é um importante fator para o sucesso no cultivo larval de espécies de caranguejos. Informações sobre as características morfológicas do estômago podem contribuir para revelar o comportamento alimentar larval ou, se há lecitotrofia em algum, ou até mesmo, em todos os estágios do ciclo larval. No presente estudo, o desenvolvimento estrutural do estômago e as funções digestivas foram examinados em larvas de duas espécies de braquiúros, Uca vocator e Panopeus occidentalis, cultivados em laboratório. Durante o desenvolvimento larval, os estômagos das larvas no primeiro e último estágio de zoea e megalopa foram microscopicamente examinados, descritos e ilustrados. Em ambas espécies, o estômago dos estágios de zoea são desenvolvidos e especializados, apresentando uma válvula cardiopilórica e um filtro pilórico funcionais. Oestágio de megalopa possui um moinho gástrico complexo e especializado semelhante àquele encontrado em caranguejos adultos com o aparecimento de estruturas rígidas e calcificadas. Estes resultados apóiam a hipótese de que o comportamento alimentar de cada estágio larval está diretamente relacionado à estrutura morfológica do estômago. Tal fato, fortemente indica que todos os estágios larvais de ambos U. vocator e P. occidentalis necessitam de uma fonte externa de alimento para completar o desenvolvimento larval no ambiente planctônico.

Megalopae of many decapod crab species accelerate their development time to metamorphosis (TTM) when exposed to natural physical and/or chemical cues characteristic of the parental habitat. In the present study, the influence of natural settlement cues on the moulting rates and development TTM in megalopae of the fiddler crab Uca vocator was investigated. The effects of mud from different habitats (including well-preserved and degraded-polluted mangrove habitats) and conspecific adult 'odours' (seawater conditioned with crabs) on the induction of metamorphosis were compared with filtered pure seawater (control). 95 to 100% of the megalopae successfully metamorphosed to first juvenile crab stage in all treatments, including the control. However, the development TTM differed significantly among treatments. Settlement cues significantly shortened development, while moulting was delayed in their absence. The fact that megalopae responded to metamorphosis-stimulating cues originating from both adult and non-adult benthic habitats demonstrates that settlement in this species may occur in a wider range of habitats within the mangrove ecosystem, including impacted areas.

Megalopas de muitas espécies de caranguejos decápodes aceleram seu período de desenvolvimento até a metamorfose (TOM) quando são expostas a estímulos naturais físicos e/ou químicos característicos do habitat parental. No presente estudo, a influência de estímulos naturais sobre as taxas de muda e sobre o PDM foi investigada nas megalopas do caranguejo violinista Uca vocator. Os efeitos da (i) lama de diferentes habitats (incluindo habitats de um manguezal bem preservado e de um degradado e poluído) e (ii) 'odores' dos adultos conspecíficos (água do mar acondicionada com caranguejos) sobre a indução da metamorfose foram comparados com (iii) água do mar pura e filtrada (controle). 95 a 100 por cento das megalopas realizaram a metamorfose com sucesso para o primeiro estágio de caranguejo juvenil em todos os tratamentos, incluindo o controle. No entanto, o PDM diferiu significativamente entre os tratamentos. Os estímulos encurtaram significativamente o desenvolvimento, enquanto que a muda foi retardada na ausência deles. O fato de que as megalopas responderam aos estímulos indutores da metamorfose oriundos de ambos os habitats bentônicos dos adultos e de habitats onde eles são ausentes, demonstra que o assentamento nesta espécie pode ocorrer em uma grande variedade de habitats dentro do ecossistema de manguezal, incluindo áreas impactadas.

Food supply is considered critical for a successful culturing of decapod larvae. However, some species may present yolk reserve sufficient to complete their larval development without external food supply (known as lecithotrophic larval development). In the present study, two experiments were carried out in order to verify whether the callianassid Lepidophthalmus siriboia have lecithotrophic behaviour or, if they need external food for their larval development: Experiment 1, larvae submitted to an initial feeding period and Experiment 2, larvae submitted to an initial starvation period. High survival rate was observed in both experiments, in which only 2 megalopae and 1 zoea III died. These results strongly suggest that larvae of L. siriboia are lecithotrophic as they have sufficiently large yolk reserve to complete their larval development, while the megalopa stage shows facultative lecithotrophy. The larval periods of each stage of the treatments were quite similar and, despite some significant differences in some larval periods, these can be related probably to larval rearing conditions, abiotic factors or, individual variability of larval health, as well as stress caused to the ovigerous females during embryogenesis.


A alimentação é considerada crítica em cultivo de larvas de decápodes. No entanto, algumas espécies podem apresentar reservas nutritivas suficientes para completar o desenvolvimento larval sem a necessidade de alimentação externa (conhecido como desenvolvimento larval lecitotrófico). No presente estudo, dois experimentos foram realizados para verificar se o callianassídeo Lepidophthalmus siriboia tem comportamento lecitotrófico ou se precisa de alimento externo para completar o desenvolvimento larval: Experimento 1, larvas submetidas a um período inicial de alimentação e, Experimento 2, larvas submetidas a um período inicial de inanição. Em ambos os experimentos, observou-se altas taxas de sobrevivência, com apenas 2 megalopas e 1 zoea III mortos. Estes resultados sugerem fortemente que larvas de L. siriboia são lecitotróficas, tendo reservas suficientes para completar o desenvolvimento larval, enquanto o estágio de megalopa apresenta lecitotrofia facultativa. Os períodos larvais de cada estágio nos tratamentos foram bastante semelhantes. No entanto, foram observadas algumas diferenças significantes entre alguns períodos, os quais podem estar relacionados às condições de cultivo, provavelmente devido a fatores abióticos, à variabilidade individual da condição larval, ou ainda a fatores como estresse causado às fêmeas ovígeras durante embriogênese.

The present study investigated whether the callianassid Callichirus major shows a lecithotrophic behaviour during larval development. Two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, larvae were subjected to an initial period of feeding, while in the second they were subjected to an initial period of starvation. In Experiment 1, 80% of C. major larvae succeeded moulting to juvenile stage in treatment with larvae fed every day. In the treatments with larvae fed for 1, 2 and 3 days there was total mortality before they reached the megalopal stage. In Experiment 2, zoea larvae showed more resistance when subjected to an initial period of starvation in which larvae starved for 1, 2 and 3 days and had survival rates of 100, 60 and 80%, respectively. But, a delay in the development duration of the zoeal stages was observed. Total mortality was observed for larvae reared in the treatment with entire starvation. The results suggest that zoeal stages of C. major are not lecithotrophic.

O presente estudo investigou se o callianassid Callichirus major apresenta um comportamento lecitotrófico durante o desenvolvimento larval. Dois experimentos foram realizados. No primeiro experimento, larvas foram submetidas a um período inicial de alimentação, enquanto no segundo elas foram submetidas a um período inicial de inanição. No experimento 1, 80 por cento das larvas de C. major mudaram com sucesso para o estágio de juvenil no tratamento com larvas alimentadas diariamente. Nos tratamentos com larvas alimentadas por 1, 2 e 3 dias, houve uma mortalidade total antes de alcançarem o estágio de megalopa. No experimento 2, as larvas zoés mostraram mais resistência quando submetidas a um período inicial de inanição. Nos tratamentos nos quais as larvas estiveram em inanição por 1, 2 e 3 dias, as taxas de sobrevivência foram100 por cento, 60 por cento e 90 por cento, respectivamente. Porém atrasos na duração do desenvolvimento dos estágios de zoés foram observados. Houve mortalidade total para as larvas cultivadas no tratamento com ausência constante de alimento. Os resultados sugerem não existir um comportamento lecitotrófico nas zoés de C. major.
